Gay men, particularly those aged 35 and over living with HIV, and all men who have sex with men (MSM) aged 45 and above, are at significantly higher risk of developing anal cancer compared to the general population. The main cause is often persistent infection with high-risk strains of HPV, which may not present symptoms in the early stages.
