Epilepsy

Overview

Epilepsy is a central nervous system (neurological) disorder which is caused by abnormal electrical activity in the brain. The area of the brain in which seizures start is called “the seizure focus”. In this area, the normal electrical signaling of the brain is not totally controlled. If the excitability gets out of control, a seizure arises. Seizures can affect any process that brain coordinates. Apart from seizure as a main symptom, other related symptoms vary depending on the type and severity of seizure.

Seizures can be classified into 2 major types based how the abnormal brain activity begins.

  1. Focal seizures or partial seizure.
When seizures appear to result from abnormal activity in just one area of the brain These seizures fall into two categories which are simple partial seizure (without loss of consciousness) and complex partial seizure with impaired awareness.
  2. Generalized seizures.A generalized seizure starts when all areas of the brain are affected by an abnormal electrical impulse.

Our scope of services

Epilepsy clinic offers a wide range of services in epilepsy care and other related neurological disorders. Our multidisciplinary team  comprises of highly experienced and well-certified neurologists, neurosurgeons, nurses, pharmacists and other medical personal specialized in epilepsy care. Supported by cutting edge technology in advanced neurological diagnostics and surgical treatments, our comprehensive services cover accurate and timely diagnosis and effective treatment. Advancements in diagnostic technology used to precisely pinpoint location of brain that generates seizure include Electroencephalography (EEG), Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU) and Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT). Treatments comprise of oral medication, surgery as well as vagus nerve stimulation and deep brain stimulation as potential alternatives for epilepsy treatment. Since epilepsy is unpredictable, it largely interferes ability to function and  patient’s daily life. Our ultimate goal is to treat individual patients while taking into a great consideration of their physical aspect, mental support, social concern, needs and quality of life.

If seizure is suspected, medical attention must be sought immediately. Timely and effective treatment greatly helps to control seizure, reduce frequency and its severity, prevent serious complications as well as improve patient’s quality of life.

Diagnosis of seizure

To detect brain abnormalities and identify the origin of seizure (epileptogenic lesion), tests may include:
