Bone diseases in children

Pediatric patients are cared by specialized pediatric chiropractors who are highly skilled and experienced and especially understand how to treat young patients, encouraging children to be fully cooperative in their treatment.

Our chiropractors know how to alleviate children’s natural fear of coming to the hospital. Our patient care services cover emergencies (such as injuries to bones and joints), infections of bones and joints, and specialized care for children’s bone diseases such as diseases that sometimes occur in newborn babies whose bones are not yet fully formed, such as having limbs of unequal length and other problems.

In urgent cases such as bone and joint fractures or dislocation, Orthopedic Center provides orthopedic specialists ready to administer treatments with state-of- the-art medical equipment for diagnosing even small injuries. We examine patients using CT scans and MRIs as necessary. Appropriate treatments vary, including splinting and using fluoroscopy prior to surgery to reduce the occurrence of unnecessary major incisions. The center emphasizes the practice of minimally invasive surgery (MIS). Appropriate treatments reduce the chance of complications. The center also provides a team of physicians specializing in rehabilitation after urgent treatment has been administered. Bone and joint infections are treated with the utmost of urgency; our team of specialists provide immediate consultation and quickly determine the cause of infection. When needed, surgery to reduce bone and tissue destruction is performed quickly.

Many varieties of bone disease can affect children. If bone disease is diagnosed from birth and promptly treated, a child has a greater chance of recovery. In some cases, it may not be necessary for a child to undergo surgery. For example, children with congenital clubfoot can be treated via the Ponseti method. By applying this technique to clubfeet within the first few weeks of a patient’s life, most cases of clubfoot (up to 90 percent) can be successfully corrected. The ability to diagnose a bone ailment quickly provides sufficient time to plan appropriate treatments, making successive stages of treatment smooth and effective for patients. A quick diagnosis also increases the number of treatment options, reduces costs, and minimizes complications that sometimes arise with certain treatments.

The malformation of limbs is a common problem. This ailment may be congenital, or a consequence of injury or disease. The center uses a variety of techniques to treat these malformations. To save resources but make treatment as effective as possible, we utilize a medical tool called the Ilizarov External Fixator, invented by a Russian physician to treat complex malformations. It provides a versatile fixation system for managing bony deformities, fractures, and complications arising from limbs of unequal length. Some operative corrections of bowlegs are done by using more modern equipment (navigators) for higher precision.

Leg length discrepancy is corrected using surgical techniques with small incisions. Children can walk only one to two days after surgery. Their legs will gradually equalize in length. If any other problems are found together with leg length discrepancy, additional treatments are implemented to heal them.

Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis – Risk of bone fractures

People’s bones often deteriorate as they age, and wrong behavior in everyday life will accelerate bone deterioration. Osteoporosis is a common disease. When osteoporosis occurs, the result is diminished bone density and the degradation of the bone structure. Affected bones are then unable to endure weight or normal amounts of pressure. This leads to easy bone fracturing. The disease is commonly found in the spine, hips, and wrists, although it can occur in all other bones of the
body. It is important that osteoporosis be diagnosed and treated at an early stage to prevent broken bones and complications. Orthopedic Center provides diagnostic tests and treats those who are at risk of osteoporosis as well as those who have already contracted the disease. The center also helps patients prevent breaking bones and treats bones that have already been fractured or broken. To prevent the easy breakage of bones throughout the body, we provide a team of well-trained medical specialists and state-of- the-art equipment to tailor treatment for each individual.

PRP THERAPY: THE ANSWER TO CHRONIC PAINS OF THE JOINTS, TENDONS AND MUSCLES

A new alternative treatment for injury and inflammation of joints, muscles and tendons, the patient’s own platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is injected into the injured area.  This type of cell therapy helps accelerate natural healing and rehabilitation.  PRP contains growth factors which help repair and restore tendons and joints, reduce pain and chronic inflammation.  Most importantly, there is no usage of steroids, no surgery is involved and no side effects is involved.

What Is PRP?

PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) is the treatment for injuries and inflammation of joints, muscles, and tendons by the patient’s own concentrated platelets. The patient’s blood is aseptically collected and processed by centrifugation to separate out red blood cells and white blood cells which are the cause of inflammation.  Healthy plasma and growth factors are now concentrated enough for use.  Once the PRP is injected into the affected area, the plasma will accelerate secretion of growth factors to repair and build new cells 50% faster than other treatments.  This is why cell therapy is another effective option to treat pain and recover bones, joints, tendons, and muscles after injuries.   However, the treatment must be under doctor’s advice.

What Injuries Can Be Treated with PRP?

PRP Treatment

The process of PRP treatment is as follows:

  1. Using aseptic technique, 10 cc of blood is drawn from the patient’s vein around back of the hand or elbow pit.
  2. Blood is centrifuged at a suitable speed to separate plasma and growth factors to get the right concentration and amount for treatment.  Doctor then injects the PRP to the injured, inflamed, or problematic area to reduce pain and stimulate the repair process.

How Many Sessions and How Often for PRP Treatment?

It takes 2 – 3 injections of PRP for the treatment, with each about 3 – 4 weeks apart or as per doctor’s advice.  Improvement is often observed from the 3rd week onward.

Pre – Treatment Guidelines

Post – Treatment Guideline

After PRP injection, patient may experience pain and tightness around the treatment area for the first 48 hours.  Use cold compression to help reduce the pain.  If there is severe pain, patient can take paracetamol.  Patient must not use NSAIDs, antibiotics or steroids as it may affect the healing process.  If you experience swelling, redness, heat around the injected area, please seek doctor’s advice immediately.

Benefits Of PRP

PRP is a medical technique used to treat injuries in the joints, muscles, and tendons. Studies have shown that treatment is quite effective with minimal side effects since patients are being injected with their own blood components. Thus, there is no synthetic leftovers in the body that can cause allergic reactions or side effects. After treatment, the condition is continuously improved. There is high efficacy of treatment. Therefore, patients or athletes tend to prefer this type of treatment for their injuries.

Limitations to PRP Treatment

Patients in the following group are not recommended for PRP therapy

What are the risks of PRP?

Patients who received PRP therapy may have pain around the injected area. However, the level of pain depends on each individual. There may also be a risk of infection in the injected area.

How to get good results with PRP Therapy

Whether the results will be satisfactory or not depends on the condition of the injury and each individual response to PRP therapy. The injured tissue and the health of the patient are also important. If the injury affects the muscle, it may heal quicker than tendons and ligaments as well as joint injuries. For example, treatment of the elbow and shoulder will have different effects and vary in duration of treatment. Most patients with chronic conditions will require longer treatment and the results may not be as effective as those with acute injuries.
